Every year Canadians gather at their town’s cenotaph on 11 November to honour all their fellow Canadians who have served their country in the military and especially those who have not returned home. These are emotional moments as the loss of loved ones or dear friends is difficult to understand and to reconcile. When World War 1 ended on 11 November 1918, the bells throughout all of Canada rang out heralding the end of hostilities and the restoration of peace and freedom in our land. That was the first “Ringing of the Peace Bell”. The Knox Church bell rang out in 1918; it rang again in 2018 at the 100th Anniversary, and it will ring again in 2023 announcing the 105th Anniversary of the Ringing of the Peace Bell.
Besides ringing the peace bell 105 times, this year’s program will include performances by a number of musical groups. The Kincardine District Secondary School Choir will start the program followed by a solo by John Low singing “Hallelujah”. The Pleats and the A Cappella Chamber Choir will also perform a selection of songs. The Kincardine Legion Flag Bearers will be part of the program accompanied by the churchs's pipers. The ceremony will end with a community favourite hymn, Highland Cathedral, performed by the Scottish pipers and Andy Fraser on the church organ.
Reverand Dan West extends a warm welcome and invitation to all members of the Kincardine and Area Community to attend the ceremony. Everyone is encouraged to attend the concert from 7 to 8 PM on Saturday, 11 November.
